Carbon monoxide: Symptoms of exposure

At low levels of exposure, carbon monoxide can cause:

• tiredness
• headaches
• flu-like symptoms
• shortness of breath
• impaired motor functions, such as:
  • muscle weakness
  • partial or total loss of limb function

At higher levels, such as when a fuel-burning appliance malfunctions indoors, or if you’re exposed to low levels for longer periods of time, you can experience:

• dizziness
• chest pain
• poor vision
• difficulty thinking

At very high levels, it can cause:

• death
• coma
• convulsions
• loss of consciousness
